Friends of the Archaeological Museum of the Puuc (MusAPuuc)

Summary 

The Archaeological Museum of the Puuc (MusAPuuc) is an initiative by the Federal Government of Mexico which, through an innovative discourse, is the result of the latest research dating back to the Pre-Classic period involving the discoveries of trade relations with Central America and the central highlands of Mexico. The museum will feature unique archaeological collections of the Maya culture, whose current history are the products of such research.

It is also a strategy for the dissemination, awareness, recognition, and appropriation of the value of the Maya culture, both for the current Maya, as heirs of a millenary civilization, as well as for national and foreign visitors. 

This project aims to support the museum in its essential activities related to the care, restoration and maintenance of the collection, as well as in dissemination strategies. 

Goals

  • Contributing with INAH in all activities related to the care, restoration, and maintenance of the collection, as well as dissemination actions.
  • Collaborating with the MusAPuuc in strategies that will allow the participation of Maya communities neighboring the museum. 
Methodology
  • Signing a collaboration agreement as an institution collaborating with INAH.
  • Developing a strategic plan to prioritize relevant cooperation activities.
  • Establishing a monitoring system for continuous improvement.

Phases or Stages

  1. Development the “Catalog of objects for exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of the Puuc”
  2. Compilation of the graphic bank that will be used for the museographic design.
  3. Definition of curation, cleaning and restoration processes, as well as collection packaging, transfer, and assembly.
  4. Museography design, elaboration of maps for exhibition and timeline (“contrasted history”) design. 
  5. Translation of project card collection from Spanish to Mayan and English, and make audio recordings as information tools for visitors. The printed project card collection will be presented in three languages: Mayan, English, and Spanish
  6. Museum website design and publication for worldwide consultation of interested parties and museum visitors.
  7. Definition of relevant locations for informational QR codes made available to visitors to expand or deepen the information presented.
  8. Design and publication of the digital and print versions of the Archaeological Museum of the Puuc collection catalog in three languages: Mayan, English, and Spanish.
  9. Definition of the processes for the care, restoration, maintenance, exhibition, loans, and exchanges of the entire collection, in accordance with current regulation. 
  10. Management of archaeological asset agreements and insurance, to be applied from the museography installation to its daily exhibition, effective throughout the Museum’s active life.
  11. Establishment of a monitoring system for continuous improvement.
Expected Results
  • For the current Maya population to have an educational resource to appropriate the ancient Maya cultural heritage that belongs to them.
  • For the current Maya to recover their identity.
  • Effective Maya culture training for children and youth, especially in Yucatán. 
  • Attraction of interested parties to collaborate effectively for the care, protection, and conservation of our heritage.
Timeframe
  • 20 months: eight months for planning and management processes; 
  • 12 months for the implementation of the corresponding actions; and 
  • six months of evaluation of the operation start-up and monitoring.
These stages overlap to achieve the completion of the project in 20 months.
 
Transparency and Accountability
  • All initiatives, projects, and activities will feature every mechanism for timely, precise information to donors, and a quick and practical communication mechanism will be established between donors and beneficiaries, in order to have a direct relationship and to be able to assess the results and effectiveness of donations.
  • Every initiative, project, and activity will be audited, and its information be made available to donors, upon request, in accordance with the corresponding regulations. 
  • All the information regarding the initiatives, projects, and actions developed with the support and sponsorship of the Foundation will be available on the Foundation’s website, in accordance with the applicable regulations.
 Dissemination Results
  • The results will be announced and disseminated through all the foundation’s electronic channels, website, social networks, as well as a direct communication system via email with donors and any person who requests the information.
  • The publication of the results will also be promoted in dissemination journals, mass media, such as newspapers and magazines, and in specialized and specific media, both for dissemination and for academic purposes.
